names released in last weeks fatal scooter accident on north union city road

North Union City Road – The Branch County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of a fatal collision involving an electric scooter that occurred last week in Coldwater Township.

60-year-old Christopher Michael Coscarelly of Coldwater died in the February 19 accident. According to investigators, the crash took place around 12:45 p.m. on North Union City Road near Narrows Road when Coscarelly’s scooter was struck by a passenger vehicle driven by 89-year-old Betty Jean Ward, also of Coldwater.

The incident remains under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting that weather conditions may have played a significant role in the crash as there had been heavy rain in the area.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office is currently receiving technical assistance from the Michigan State Police Reconstruction Unit to determine the exact cause of the collision.

What Are Your Legal Rights After an Electric Scooter Accident in Coldwater Township?

Electric scooter accidents can result in serious injuries or fatalities and often involve complex legal and insurance considerations. Understanding your rights and options after such incidents is essential.

Seek Immediate Medical and Legal Assistance. Anyone involved in a scooter accident should seek prompt medical evaluation, even if injuries appear minor. For severe or fatal accidents, consulting a personal injury or wrongful death attorney early can help ensure that legal rights are protected and claims are handled properly.

Document the Incident. Collect as much evidence as possible, including police reports, photographs of the crash scene, witness statements, and any video footage. Thorough documentation helps establish liability and supports insurance or legal claims.

Understand Liability and Insurance. Drivers involved in scooter accidents may be held legally responsible for injuries or property damage. Insurance policies can cover medical expenses, property repair, or, in cases of death, wrongful death claims. Factors such as weather, road conditions, and vehicle operation may influence liability, so professional guidance is often necessary.

Consult a Personal Injury or Wrongful Death Attorney. A qualified lawyer can review accident reports, insurance policies, and medical records to determine responsibility and advise on potential claims. Attorneys can assist with filing claims, negotiating settlements, or pursuing litigation to recover damages for medical costs, lost income, property damage, and pain and suffering.
